I find that the best way to deal with people like the young pharmacy worker is to lean in (literally), look them right in the eye and ask them, directly and firmly, “Excuse me, did you just roll your eyes at me?” Now they’re in the hot seat in front of their co-workers and you’ve sent them a clear message that you’re not going to put up with their bullshit. You can walk away knowing you stood up for yourself, in front of witnesses, which is a lot more empowering than ignoring the fact that you were publicly humiliated and openly judged. It saves you having to rant about it after the fact and gives you an even better story to tell.
It’s not easy to do. It may take some practice so that in the moment, you’ll be able to respond.
Hang tough, sistah!
