I laughed. I cried. I cringed. I spanned the entire gamut of human emotion. Then I shared with my photojournalism students who can not take pictures while they quarantine. To encourage them to work on their writing skills, I’ve given them an assignment to write about an event from their childhood that left some kind of indelible mark, be it sad, poignant, terrifying, or cringe- worthy (I especially encouraged cringe-worthy). I told them to write honestly and from the gut. This is such a great piece of writing and shows how to use humor to tackle an appalling event head on, without mincing words or trying to sanitize the situation.

Photography, you have always been a jealous bride. I will always love you — I’m just no longer in love.
