In early July, a woman from an adjacent neighborhood posted on Nextdoor about a dog that kept showing up at her house. According to her post, the owner would leave the dog in the yard all day while he was at work. To get to the woman’s house, the little dude had to cross several busy streets and she was worried that sooner or later, he’d be toast. Plus, it was like a million degrees out every single day. She had had repeated conversations with the owner about having to take better care of his dog, eventually telling him that if he didn’t, she was going to find him another home.

I saw her post and PM’d her right away. The woman rescues cats and the dog’s a chaser so she couldn’t hang on to him for very long. Through text exchanges on Nextdoor, we decided that the next time the dog showed up at her house, she would call and I would come and get him.

A few days later, the woman called at the crack of ass to say the dog was back. I told her I needed about an hour before I would be fully functional. She couldn’t bring him inside her house, because — cats, so she leashed him to the RV parked in her driveway. I was in my car pulling out when she called to say the dog was gone — someone had taken him. She felt like crap. I felt like crap. But I had a gut feeling he’d turn up again.
