The people who came through Ellis Island - the Italians, the Irish, the Germans, the Poles - all those Eastern European immigrants - the Jews fleeing pogroms in Russia, Belarus, Poland - none of these people were white in their country of origen. They were the poor, destitute, bottom rung of society with no chance for uppward mobility. They escaped persecution, famine, and hopelessness to reinvent themselves in America. Within a couple of generations, they became white - members of the dominant class.
