You mean Arik Sharon, the big hawk who facilitated the slaughter of thousands of men, women and children by Christian militia in Sabra and Shatila in Lebanon in 1982? That Sharon? The 2005 withdrawal caused rioting among the ultra-orthodox in Israel. Yigal Amir, a fine upstanding member of that community then assassinated PM Yitzhak Rabin as he addressed a crowd of thousands at a peace rally in Tel Aviv.
Here's a fun fact: Itamar Ben Gvir, a right wing extremist serving in Netanyahu's coalition government would dress up as Yigal Amir for Purim. Amir is a hero to the ultra-orthodox.
Zionism, conflated with religious fanaticism or nationalism, or both is a right-wing ideology. I'm anti-Zionist. And Jewish - Israeli born. I don't believe being anti right-wing ideology is an ideology nor is it anti-Semitic.
Seven months ago, I published a piece on Medium in which I addressed the list of platitudes made by the blindly pro Israel camp. The only thing that changed in the time since was the protests that took place on college campuses, to which another 2-3 talking points were added, and the body count on the Palestinian side. The headline for the article was, I'm Not Anti-Israel, but Neither am I Pro.
Seven months and another 40,000 dead Palestinians later, my feelings have changed. I now consider Israel to be one of those corrupt tribal ethno states propped up by a superpower that will eventually cut ties and subsidies for its vicious proxy once that proxy is deemed too much of a liability. Or that superpower, approaching its twilight and inevitable demise will turn its attention elsewhere. Either way, the tiny, corrupt tribal ethno state may find itself isolated in a hostile region, among an aggrieved people and the international community, still disgusted by its genocide-adjacent campaign against a civilian population will be nowhere to be found. And I will think to myself, this is the bed you shat in and now its your to lie in.
