You’ve just articulated my exact thoughts, which I’ve expressed in my own oversimplified way: Christianity, Colonialism and Capitalism bolloxed the world. Conservative thought has always sounded like an oxymoron to me.

I recently discovered a fantastic podcast called The Fall of Civilizations. It’s like taking a time machine and witnessing from the safety of invisible omnipresence events as they unfold in the trajectories of ancient civilizations. So far, I’ve only made it through the Sumerians, the Assyrians, the Bronze Age collapse and halfway through the Egyptians. What’s struck me the most is how sophisticated the idea of democracy is and what an uphill battle it is to maintain.

As a species, 90 percent of human existence was spent as hunter-gatherers. Civilizations arose from the domestication of seeds. Agriculture based societies changed our evolutionary trajectory from sustainable to destined for failure by design.

I think we’re quickly approaching one of those tipping points that have occurred throughout history in which a combination of factors: shifting allegiances, waning influence of once powerful empires and climate change lead to collapse. I see a lot of parallels between the Bronze Age collapse and the globally interconnected modern world with the main difference being that the ancient world was very small; collapse of multiple civilizations that relied on one another economically and strategically only had regional impact.

Photography, you have always been a jealous bride. I will always love you — I’m just no longer in love.
